Happy 2008 alison

Jcwf 19:18, 12 Eanáir 2008 (UTC)Reply

Tsk,tsk. Never good enough for these Irish lol.

Jcwf 00:47, 19 Eanáir 2008 (UTC)Reply

LOL - indeed :) Do you think the translations look better closed rather than defaulting to open, BTW? - Alison 00:59, 19 Eanáir 2008 (UTC)Reply
I think closed is better, if only because it creates a natural separation with any following languages. We had a discussion about that at nl: and have it closed there too. Jcwf 01:20, 19 Eanáir 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks!

Hi Alison, thanks for your warm welcome. I wish I could speak some Irish but I'm afraid I will remain a real ignoramus for a long, a very long time... since it's not related to Romance languages. I'll try to add some translations to Occitan and Catalan (or even some other major Romance language I know). You're doing a great job in defending and promoting your culture and language, it's a tough job, I wish you good luck and lots of courage! You're also welcome to the Occitan counterpart so we can get to know more about the Celtic languages and traditions! Have a good night! Bona nuèch! See you soon, Capsot 22:02, 23 Eanáir 2008 (UTC)Reply

one, two, Irish

Well, well, seems this whole globe wants to help teach these Irisch to count, these days. lol. Jcwf 23:37, 23 Eanáir 2008 (UTC)Reply

lol!! Well, we need all the help we can get, esp. seeing as we can only get up to ten for some reason :) BTW - I've uploaded pronunciation files today. More to follow when I get a chance - Alison 01:15, 24 Eanáir 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I was delighted to see that and have added them on the corresponding nl: pages. Maith agat!

MediaWiki:Noexactmatch

Hi Alison, please can You have a look at Plé MediaWiki:Noexactmatch, many thanks in advance, please feel free to contact me if You have any questions about it, best regards, --éan (:> )=| 02:37, 4 Feabhra 2008 (UTC)Reply

Uff, superfast answer :) thanky, it works fine, I just tested with oíche, maybe You want to add such preload templates also for verbs, adjectives and adverbs ~
I would also recommend to semiprotect Teimpléad:Teimpléad-Ainmfhocal (and maybe You don't like the naming, just move to any better name and update the link in MediaWiki:Noexactmatch then) :)
Kind regards, and thanks for the quick action, --éan (:> )=| 02:51, 4 Feabhra 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hi there! I think the name's just perfect and, just to be sure, I semi-protected and sysop-move prot'd the template. "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" :) Thanks again - Alison 04:47, 4 Feabhra 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ok, yes I did the same kind of protection on is,de,es.wikt with those kind of templates iirc.
I would like to point You to another thing that could be done with this template: when You click on any redlink You are redirected to the editing the page and don't get the nice preload option (compare stjarna and is:réalta, where You can chose 4 preloaded entries (nafnorð, sagnorð...)), but it can be applied via MediaWiki:Newarticletext, Steinninn from is.wikt pointed out a nice method for this, please see [1], it can also be done in a nice drop down menu which is handy if You want to have many templates for different languages also (I did that on de.wikt).
Best regards, --éan (:> )=| 16:39, 4 Feabhra 2008 (UTC)Reply
Oh my goodness!! :O There's a lot of work in that! I must say, I like the look of the dewikti version, with the popup menus, but the iswikti might be simpler in the short-term. Moilleadóir - you're our templates expert - what do you think of this scheme? - Alison 20:05, 4 Feabhra 2008 (UTC)Reply
Úsáideoir:Spacebirdy/newarticle.js and Úsáideoir:Spacebirdy/newarticletext are working now (thanks to Melancholie who helped me with transfering the JavaScript), I let it up to You and Moilleadóir which variant You prefer or if You want to add anything at all :) best regards, --éan (:> )=| 02:02, 5 Feabhra 2008 (UTC)Reply
P.S. If You want to see it work, You will have to add
document.write('<script type="text/javascript" src="'
  + '&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript&dontcountme=s"></script>');
to Your personal monobook.js, --éan (:> )=| 02:03, 5 Feabhra 2008 (UTC)Reply

Bots

Hi Allison, I blocked BotMultichill on nl: because he was making undesirable links to the tlh Klingon wikti that still exists but is to be removed. The links to it partly work but are not interpreted as iw's anymore and end up on the lemaa page. Birdy and I have tried to convince Multichill to teach his bot better manors but to no avail so far. Volkov did ajust his it seems. Maybe better block BotMultichill? Jcwf 19:41, 25 Feabhra 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, a real problem, not only on Wiktionaries, I contacted some bot owners and Purodha gave me the good hint to contact someone from svn directly, so I wrote Andre Engels and he was so kind to open a bug and even sent me an update for wiktionary_family.py, which I offered Multichill, but I think he just has not seen the message so far. I hope they soon fix it on svn so all bots work normal again. Tlh links had never worked btw. that was intentional as I was told some time ago in bugzilla:9164. Best regards, --éan (:> )=| 19:53, 25 Feabhra 2008 (UTC)Reply
He answered now, I think it should work now, best regards, --éan (:> )=| 23:57, 25 Feabhra 2008 (UTC)Reply
oookay. I saw some tlh interwikis going in just today. Does Multichill have this sorted now or should I block in the interim? - Alison 00:11, 26 Feabhra 2008 (UTC)Reply
He answered a short while ago, so I think the last tlh-addings were made before he tried to fix it, I would recommend to not block now, best regards, --éan (:> )=| 00:14, 26 Feabhra 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ok, so :) Maith agat! - Alison 00:31, 26 Feabhra 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sure, I don't mind, I have however no botstatus here, and just run him to see if there are still tlh-links left we might have not seen. However I do not plan to run the bot further unless there is something You need and tell me to.
Best regards, --éan (:> )=| 22:25, 3 Márta 2008 (UTC)Reply

Úsáideoir:Spacebirdy/Vicífhoclóir:Sainroghanna

Hi Alison, I would like to ask You something:

Please could You, if You like it copy the code in Úsáideoir:Spacebirdy/common.js to MediaWiki:Common.js (or to Your monobook.js if You want to test it there first), it will activate this page Úsáideoir:Spacebirdy/Vicífhoclóir:Sainroghanna (please move to correct namespace and correct name) where the user can chose 4 settings:

  1. Use preferences on this page
  2. Hide Site Notice
  3. Use w:User:Lupin/popups.js (Originally for Wikipedia)
  4. Leave ALL translation sections expanded (and similar hidden sections) - Default is to leave them collapsed

it works like en:WT:PREFS.

If You like it and if You want to use it here, please could You also translate the four options to Irish (the text is found in Úsáideoir:Spacebirdy/custom.js)

Many thanks and best regards, --éan (:> )=| 20:54, 6 Márta 2008 (UTC)Reply

P.S., thought You might also want to add something to MediaWiki:Edittools, I made an example-page on Úsáideoir:Spacebirdy/edittools wich works with this code (to be put in Monobook.js so You can see the testpage working).
Best regards, --éan (:> )=| 00:09, 7 Márta 2008 (UTC)Reply

Diminutives

Hi Alison,

A small question. I believe Gaelic also forms diminutives occasionally (on -ín?). Is there one for a name like Fiona?

Jcwf 17:29, 26 Márta 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Jaap. I don't think I've ever seen one for a name like Fiona. If there was, it would be something like Fiónín which sounds a little strange. The ín bit is the usual diminutive. I've a cousin called "Réaltín", as it happens - Alison 15:54, 30 Márta 2008 (UTC)Reply

MediaWiki:Edittools

Hi Alison, thanks for adding the script for Vicífhoclóir:Sainroghanna. If You want the Edittools to work correctly (with drop down menue), please also add the content of User:Spacebirdy/edittools.js to the MediaWiki:Monobook.js. Thanks, best regards, --éan (:> )=| 13:41, 4 Aibreán 2008 (UTC)Reply

Y Déanta - thank you for that :) Sorry for taking so long, though. I need to spend more time over here (and intend to!) - Alison 15:24, 4 Aibreán 2008 (UTC)Reply

Wrong translation

Noticed this a while back, but keep forgetting to mention it. The first link on the Leathanaigh speisialta page reads Amosar a árbore de categorías. I’m guessing that’s Catalan for Crann na gCatagóirí. ☸ Moilleadóir 04:36, 8 Aibreán 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi, fixed on betawiki:MediaWiki:Categorytree/ga, I have no idea why it was in Catalan :(

Arghhh, I don't understand, it seems some other messages got Catalan also, I informed the betawiki people via irc and fixed some by taking the translations from here. These still need to be fixed:

MediaWiki:Common.js

Hi Alison,

I'm an admin on the English Wiktionary, and one of our editors pointed out here that your site doesn't work for logged-out editors who have JavaScript turned on. This is due to your last change to MediaWiki:Common.js, which fixed one problem and thereby brought out another problem that had been latent. The simplest fix is to comment out the line that calls writeln, and I'd suggest doing that immediately. Afterward, if you need help finding a better way to do what that line is trying to accomplish (I don't know how comfortable you are with JavaScript), feel free to drop by the English Wiktionary's Grease pit (en:Wiktionary:Grease pit) and we'll see what we can do for you. :-)

Thanks!

Ruakh 03:05, 13 Aibreán 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Alison,

Javascript

I think our script pages could do with some tidying up. After looking at them and comparing with en.wikt and en.wiki I have to say it’s a scary prospect, but probably worth doing. There are different versions of functions on different sites and sometimes you find something in Common.js and sometimes in Monobook.js (fr.wikt & Vicipéid have an empty Common.js, fr.wiki have an empty Monobook.js!). We have some things which look like they might be duplicates taken from different sites and some that I'm not sure what they do or whether they're redundant. There’s also some English in there. So, it would be a good thingtm to go through and discuss each section.

Common.js   @en.wikt   @en.wiki   @fr.wiki

Monobook.js   @en.wikt   @en.wiki   @fr.wikt   @vicipéid

OK - ask her to block the two IPs blocked on here this morning. That'll help - Alison 20:00, 6 Bealtaine 2008 (UTC)Reply

MediaWiki:Allnotinnamespace

Having been doing some tidying up of messages that are different to the default with not much cause and came across this one. The only difference to the msg at Betawiki is that leathanach is reduced to lch. I couldn't figure out where you see this message though. If it's the same context as Speisialta:AllPages then is space an issue? ☸ Moilleadóir 15:37, 5 Meitheamh 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ainmspás nua - Aguisín

Don't know if you've been following the discussion here, but we have some people offering to add information about dialect words, but they're not keen on adding it through our usual entries (too much work) and would like to see it in a list form. So as a compromise (since this would be a great resource to add to entries) I suggested we might be able to do it through an Appendix.

Is this appropriate do you think? If so, I'll go ahead and create a request at Bugzilla. ☸ Moilleadóir 13:33, 10 Meitheamh 2008 (UTC)Reply

Moilleadóir - I happen to know that some other wikis have their own custom namespaces, like Portal:Blah, etc. It's do-able but needs some justification. In our case, I think it should be okay :) Want to try contact a dev? - Alison 06:45, 18 Meitheamh 2008 (UTC)Reply

Could you have a look at the aistr blocks? They are a bit strange now. E.g. flannbhuí

Or is this an Irish no to these Europeans?

Jcwf 03:42, 18 Meitheamh 2008 (UTC)Reply

Mea culpa, Jaap. I broke it while messing about with MediaWiki. Oops :) Thanks for letting me know ;) - Alison 06:44, 18 Meitheamh 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've just upgraded to Firefox 3 and guess what's disappeared? They work fine for me on en.wikt & fr.wikt.

Seems something in our JS has come home to roost, so I'll see if I can sort it out tonight, but I think I need to go and eat something first.

Moilleadóir 10:34, 19 Meitheamh 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, I haven't changed anything so far, but I've done enough reading and comparing to make my head spin. But tomorrow is another day I suppose. ☸ Moilleadóir 16:42, 19 Meitheamh 2008 (UTC)Reply

Cheers! :) - Alison 15:03, 8 Deireadh Fómhair 2008 (UTC)Reply

The above comment was not made by me. I do not remember ever editing this site, the Irish Wiktionary, and certainly not recently. Someone else is also saying their name is Jonas Rand, however there is a (very) small doubt in my mind that this is flat-out impersonation. The comment above I am also unsure of, but I am highly skeptical of. The link that I provided above is probably the same "Jonas Rand" as the person who Fone4My claims to be in contact with. In that post, F4M also says he wants a checkuser to see if a confirmed sockpuppet of him, MagdelenaDiArco, is Iamandrewrice/Benniguy, who was in contact with me at one point. Although you probably think otherwise as much of your time throughout early 2008 was wasted on Ben, I don't think that Ben is a bad person and that he would go so far out of his way to create the sockpuppet Fone4My, though they both edited on Maltese and Italian topics. --the real Jonas Rand 68.96.213.118 00:15, 12 Deireadh Fómhair 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sailing terms

Hi Alison

Do you happen to know anybody with a good knowledge of sailing terms? In en. (or even .ga?) The Dutch wikti has a bunch of jargon. Author is long gone and there are no translations at all. I came across a word 'heklastig' e.g. it means lopsided in the sense that the aft of the ship is loaded more heavily than the bow. 'Boeglastig' is the opposite. I'm looking for translations. In any language really.

Jcwf 00:22, 7 Mí na Nollag 2008 (UTC)

Actually, Jaap, I have just the man you need. w:en:User:ClemMcGann - aka Clement - is one of the curators of the w:en:National Maritime Museum of Ireland in Dublin. Not only is he extremely well-up on nautical terms, I daresay he has a bit of Gaeilge too. Give him a shout and tell him I sent you. Email might be best :) - Alison 04:52, 7 Mí na Nollag 2008 (UTC)
