This is my worklist here. I'm trying to track some of the sysop work that needs doing and the MediaWiki changes/translations. Please feel free to add anything you want done in here & I'll get to it!'

A list of progress to-date is now up at Vicífhoclóir:Ionad pobail

Here five minutes and already making work for you!
  • (For Irish words) Could info about irregular (or less obvious) declensions be included in the noun template or the declension template? I seem to have forgotten anything I knew about template syntax.
  • Is there any standard for showing variant forms or linking them? E.g. éigin/éicínt/éighinteacht/inteacht
  • It's pretty confusing to have the declension template using the English gender abbreviations, but displaying the Irish ones, e.g. {{f4}} (feminine) displaying b⁴ (baininscneach). The confusion of firinscneach and feminine is bound to come up sooner or later. OTOH the references that use this system are usually for learners so they do use the English abbreviations. A bit of a mess, but I think it would be most straightforward to just always use the Irish ones, so that the template looks like what appears in the article.
  • Is there a template for adverbs/dobhriathra?
  • Is that enough questions now? :)
Moilleadóir 07:55, 15 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Heh! You're killing me already!! :) Re. template syntax; I'm very new to wikt and they do things so differently here (I'm sysop on en.wp and I know that stuff backwards. This is soo weird here). Jaap, aka, User:Jcwf has a really good handle on the templates & would be a good place to start. Steal liberally from en.wikt where necessary and aistrigh away on them. There's not a shred of Polsaí here at all and it sounds like you're basically setting it here now. Not a bad thing :) I think we have a liberal mix of declensions here and need to settle on something for everyone's sanity. A bilingual page on gender would be neat (have one here somewheres). Fir is obviously Female as Mná is obviously Male .... right? ;) No adverbs tempate, AFAIK. Which brings up another issue; categories, so we can find all that stuff!! Fun, fun. - Alison 08:10, 15 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC) (will have to think some more on infrastructure)Reply[reply]
I don't have much experience of wikt myself and really only learnt about templates on Wikipedia as it came up.
After looking at a lot of the language templates over on a couple of things spring to mind:
  • there are some very interesting and elaborate language templates out there
  • the Irish ones seem like overkill for Vicífhoclóir (do we really need full declension tables?)
  • it often takes quite a bit of trolling through pages (until you find the one person who either knows what's going on or is setting the standards) before you can decide what templates are current and viable
With that second point in mind I think I'll create some pages for discussion under Vicífhoclóir: (if that's appropriate) and we can start hammering out something like Wiktionary's Entry layout article (but hopefully less scary). ☸ Moilleadóir 11:07, 16 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Dia dhuit Alison, conas ta tu? Jcwf 22:14, 21 Lúnasa 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Le do thoil, have a look at this. Could you put this on the css here? Otherwise the audio template does not get its loudspeaker picture. And we'll need it: if their is one things hard about Gaelic it's pronunciation... Jcwf 13:16, 22 Lúnasa 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi, thanks for the css, but the bit about the loudspeaker is still missing or so, have look at veldslag Jcwf

Ugh! I need to look into that some more, so. I'll get to it tomorrow. Doing some heavy work on the MediaWiki translation updates right now. Fun stuff :) - Alison 06:03, 23 Lúnasa 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

As you clearly are looking for fun stuff to do , perhaps you could translate the -noun-, if and show1 templates and their categories as bit better.  ;-))

I've taken the liberty to follow Danish example, because that seems a handy and non-mothertonguespeakerfriendly way to go. I know that the latter is a total non-consideration at en.wikti (and increasingly at some other wiktis) but we smaller wikti's cannot afford to be so inconsiderate IMHO. In fact the smaller languages benefit a lot from roaming polyglots. Jcwf 17:14, 23 Lúnasa 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Is Alison Gaelic for busy beaver? :-)

Hey Alison

Hi Alison, if you need any bot help let me know! (preferably on, since I won't check here often; I don't speak the language.) Wikihermit 16:48, 24 Lúnasa 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Okay. Tell me what you need done :-). I'll head on over to the other wiki too. Wikihermit 19:21, 24 Lúnasa 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Flagged and running on this wiki! I'll take a look at the other wiki tomorrow :-). Wikihermit 02:52, 25 Lúnasa 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I just hope someone will make sure my mistakes in a language I don't really speak will get corrected. Although I must say it is nice to be received with a smile: I tried to do the same on the Maori wikti and got told I was being disrespectful to the Maori people by a native speaker... Actually what I do is push the fanach button on wikipedia and find a juicy word to copy. I also copy the first sentence or so in the hope that it can stand as a definition here. They may take some adjusting, but that can wait until you can cleaned house I suppose Jaap

Hi, Forgive me for grinning at the -noun- thing.. I made it such that is generates a category by means of the language code, but I realize this probably results in ungrammatical names, which is why I left them as red links rather than generating category pages.. It may not be possible to do this automatically in Gaelic, unless we generate a second serious of (mutated?) language names. What would be a suitable name for category 'Ainmfhocal Gaeilge'? Jcwf

Hi Alison, The French wikti is looking for the etymology of 'hooligan'. Isn't that from an Irish family name Hoolihan or so? Jcwf

Thanks for the reference. The French still maintain it is Russian in origin from about 1925.. I hope they see the errors of their ways, They usually do. Anyway, could you give me the Gaelic spelling for Houlihan? I'd like to put it in the etym on nl. Jcwf 19:17, 8 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I decided to google and found ..Hoolihan originally appeared in Gaelic as O hUallachain, which is derived from the word "uallach," which means "proud."... Is this OK?
Yep. Sounds good, except watch the lenition; "O hUallacháin" - Alison 19:57, 8 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for protecting me from the O hUallacháin clan! Not tha I mind erotic art that much.. ;-) I hope you can concur with my categorizations. The uimhir template is not complete, I put in as many numerals as I could find on I have comparable templates for Dutch, Danish, in part Maori and we working on the Finish one. They are an easy way to import the essential numerals across languages.

Oh, when are we opening a nice Irish pub here? Jcwf 16:43, 14 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Spambot nonsense

Thank you for the redirected delete template.
Steward Drini blocked some IP blocks over at Assamese Wiktionary today, and it seems to have done the trick. The last days as.wiktionary has been visited frequently by the bot, but after the blocks it hasn't been there. Maybe similar blocks would do the trick here too? See: as.wikt Special:Log/block --Jorunn 23:04, 18 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks, Jorunn. I've just applied two rangeblocks over on gd.wikti, but I like what drini did there. Heh - three months :) I ran a rDNS and discovered that they're coming from Taiwan, as it happens - Alison 23:49, 18 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]
nl. is being hit too now; how do we stop this? Jcwf
I've stopped it here now, and on gd.wikti, too. You're a sysop, right? Run a three month rangeblock on the following CIDR notated ranges, with AO enabled, turn off ACB;
... that should contain 99% of it. Ours is gone here now :) Stupid spambots - Alison 03:48, 19 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Check out my block log for details - Alison 03:50, 19 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Here's another suggestion: 6 Month spambot on the wild 6 Month spambot on the wild 6 Month spambot on the wild 6 Month spambot on the wild 6 Month spambot on the wild 6 Months spambot running wild on wikis 1 year xanax spambot

I think we need to be really careful with, it blocks 65,000 ips. Drini 15:18, 25 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Redirects in templates?

Are there any issues with using redirects in templates? I’ve already used one for -art- -> -alt- and I’m wondering if this could be a way of resolving the tension between using Irish and allowing anyone to edit. We could just have all the well known English ones redirect to the Irish ones.

Not sure if this would cause performance problems though. ☸ Moilleadóir 03:10, 19 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Template redirects should be just fine. MediaWiki is peppered with internal redirs already (look at how so many of the intrinsic ones are redirs to the Irish phrases). Server performance is minimal. I've already done it with {{scrios}} and it's Béarla equivalent {{delete}} as it's been requested already. It works just fine :) If some editors are Béarla-only, I'm utterly fine with accommodating them with redirs so long as the base templates make a reasonable effort to remain as Gaeilge. We can put it to the community later if needs be (soon as there is one!). BTW - the speedy-delete system is running well now, so mark anything you like now as {{scrios|Ní maith liom é}} and I'll be able to hit it easily - Alison 03:56, 19 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

We seem to have some default sort in operation. Have a look at Catagóir:ga:Ainmfhocal for instance - é sorts after the end of the alphabet. Ideally you’d want to ignore accents except for identical words where you’d want unaccented to sort before accented. In the real world it might be best to go for ignoring accents. Having 2 listings for E just seems daft. ☸ Moilleadóir 14:22, 19 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Ummm - yeah. No sense in having two sets. I'm not sure how you fix this, but it's probably a wiki config (aka developer) option. I'll research it and find out how to do it. Jaap - what's your opinion on this? - Alison 18:12, 19 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]
No clue.. Dutch does not really have that problem. We would write eean not ėan Jcwf

The important questions

Why does your talk page look different (to mine)? It looks like it has an extra <div> in there surrounding the main body and giving you a white background.

Must rush off - I have a birthday dinner to get to - but had to ask. ☸ Moilleadóir 06:15, 21 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Check out Úsáideoir:Alison/Talkheader for the lowdown. Steal it if you like it, or I can design a page for you :) Folks on en.wp are always asking. Go - birthday dinner time! Yours, by any chance? - Alison 06:21, 21 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC) (and thanks for everything here. You're a star!)Reply[reply]
BTW, you can leave a div unclosed, so that your talk page has nothing at the bottom to clutter the place up. It doesn't hurt anything - Alison 06:22, 21 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thank you!

Of course I don't mind! I've got no language skills to speak of other than some rudimentary French and Spanish, so it is truly appreciated! ~*Hugs*~ ArielGold 23:45, 21 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

nl:WikiWoordenboek:Welcome to our foreign guests

Would you return the favor?

Jcwf 20:52, 22 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'd be absolutely delighted to help over there. Where can I start? Ok if I translate the welcome/intro interlanguage text (as you have here. Thank you!!) ? - Alison 20:40, 28 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Alison, I've set up my talk page here, and I have the same request as elsewhere: would you mind translating my talk page notice as gaelige? (hope that's right) I don't care whether you put the translated version above or below the English. I think having both languages would look nice. Thanks, and thanks again for setting up this account for me! Love, Kyoko 14:24, 25 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]
