I’ve noticed this in a few templates. Is it necessary? Templates without it still show up on this list of templates. ☸ Moilleadóir 09:18, 17 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply

Strictly speaking; no, it's not. It's just used as a root category for templates, the idea being that it subdivides down into categories of template types later. Like you say, though, there's a special page which does the same. Think it should be removed? - Alison 11:57, 17 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply
Hmm...maybe it is useful then as that special page isn’t easily discoverable. I do think having some template categories is a good idea, so if it adds to an understandable hierarchy I suppose it’s good. Oh well, another loose end (of sooo many)...to add it to all the templates that don’t have it! It should probably also be plural.
Think I might go and ‘tie it off’ now as puzzling over template syntax and dependencies has lost it’s charm for the present and I could do with something straightforward. ☸ Moilleadóir 13:55, 17 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply

Gender

I propose we discourage the use of the {{f}} template since it is ambiguous - does it stand for firinscneach (masculine) or feminine (baininscneach)?

To facilitate this I’ve created some new templates: {{fir}}, {{bain}}, {{masc}} and {{fem}}. {{masc}} and {{fem}} just redirect to {{fir}} and {{bain}}. The templates can now take a parameter of the declension number so they can also replace {{f1}}, {{f2}}, etc. They also produce longer output (fir. / bain.) to make clear that {{f}} doesn’t stand for "feminine", which a possible interpretation of a page with no Irish and only masculine nouns.

Since {{m}} isn’t ambiguous I’ve just made it a redirect.

I haven’t done anything to {{f}} as yet, but I think it should either be deleted or it should output text suggesting the use of another template (i.e. {{fir}} or {{fem}}).

I'd say go ahead and delete the 'f' template. The redlink in itself will be message enough to show anglophones that it's elsewhere. I like the 'fir' and 'bain' templates; that's a workable solution. By rights, we need a Vicífhoclóir:Inscne, maybe explaining (bilingually?) how gender works in the Irish language. I might throw something together later today, if I get a chance - Alison 18:05, 19 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply
